I have a question regarding around tricks such as around the world or USA etc. When performing these tricks for a lets say competition*, is it mandatory to first go for small cup, or can one start with big cup? Or is there no specific order in cups, as long as all are incorperated?

    Thanks :)

    Either way is acceptable.

We actually do things in reverse to the Japanese - their "around" tricks start from the small cup (it's actually more "ergonomical" this way), and their airplanes always land with the big cup facing them (this way, the string won't snag at the ken during multi-turn tricks).

I've always been told that it is more "traditional" to do small cup first. I switch off from time to time, just whatever cup I feel like doing first. I don't think it matters in a competition unless stated otherwise.

This has always confused me. I started off learning tricks JKA style (before I even knew this whole scene existed). So I've always gone small cup first and that's the way I've taught friends who I've gotten into it. I'd seen people do it big cup first and I always thought they were just doing it wrong until I started seeing pros do it in comps and such. It kinda messed with my head but I've stuck to small cup first. I just wonder if I'd be expected to go big cup first if I ever entered a comp.
Personally, I think going small, big, base just looks cleaner and is easier for me to do.

the JKA usually starts from small cup because they are timed, and it is quicker from that position. either way though, it is still an around trick.
