It's a mix between yoyo and kendama. It looks like all the tricks are yoyo based, but made into a dama. Just because i love kendama so much I think I'm going to buy it. If I don't like it or can't get the hang of it, it'll still be a cool thing for the collection.
Seems a bit silly but might be fun. No spike = lame IMO. Ball in a cup is less compelling to me than a bilboquet.
I think its more Poi/flow-esque than yoyo-esque, especially given that example video (the dude in it is obviously an accomplished poi-er (?). But either way... I got to try one out at ToyFair. Simple, but fun. I don't see it becoming something I go to often, but it is a novel toy, and they're fairly inexpensive. Wiens was doing these 'slinger' sorta tricks and having a lot of fun with it. Daniel (the guy who came up with it) seems like a really nice dude. Very friendly and eager to nerd out on skilltoy / juggle stuff. I was happy to meet him
Poi. Yes that was it. I couldn't think of the name but yes. And it does look pretty novelty. Still a fun collection piece
Maybe the next generation could be something like a sarado large enough to slip over your finger. Something with a cup on both sides would make me more interested. I've never really been into Poi that much, though.
Hi I'm Dan the inventor of the Ringdama. I was a professional juggler for 35 years, and I am huge fan of skill toys especially Begleri, Kendama, Astro Jax, yo yo and poi swinging. The Ringdama to me is like the Kendama's little brother. A toy that will never replace the Kendama but a fun additional toy you can carry in your pocket, and jam some of the same types of tricks. There is no spike but the shape of the cup gives you 4 challenging side stalls to try. You can also attach it to your Kendama in several different ways to make other toys. I am working on my Kendama skills and I hope to get a chance to attend more Kendama events.
'Sarado' is the Japanese name for the cups on a kendama, the cross-piece that fits onto the spike. I hadn't considered attaching it to a kendama. Ha! Might have to try one out. I have one for demo, and a few up for sale in the Dama on the Drive shop now
I have found three different ways to attach it. First I took off the Kendama ball and string, slid the cross piece off and wrapped the Ringdama strap to the center(A Kendama player in Vegas showed this to me) this made a three cup toy. Then I wrapped it around the body of the Kendama and put the Sarado(crosspeice) back on to hold the Ringdama in place and made a four cup toy with a spike. I also can wrap it around the very bottom of the Kendama but that one doesn't work as well as the others. I'm also finding that practicing one helps me improve at the other, so that is cool too.
I got one of these from my co-worker who got one and wasn't so into it. TBH it's fun for maybe a half hour but i ended up just palming the ball and using the cup while playing dama. I can't do any poi stuff because I only have one, but the weight is super light and it makes me think it wouldn't be the easiest poi set to use. Glad to add it to my collection of toys.
