Okay guys. I've been avoiding string tricks for almost a year at this point. I feel like I MIGHT be ready to take the plunge. My question to you fine people of the downspike community: which tricks should I learn first? Like first 3-5 tricks and in what order? I know I should just jump in somewhere but I'm scared.... A little guidance from the community would be great moral support for me. :)

    1. 0.5 Spacewalk, and by extension, spacewalk in
    2. Trapeze (which is really a front 0.5 spacewalk variant)
    3. Mooncircle
    4. Swirl
    5. Carousel

I do agree with @azleonhart 's list, but I think I would add in finger/hand roll between moon circle and swirl because you're going to need a method of going from the tama to the ken without throwing your whole setup.

For me, this is my list
    1) Spacewalks / Mooncircles
    2) Handroll / Finger rolls
    3) Swirls / Carousels
    4) Butterfly

For butterfly, I suggest you get comfortable with the first three.

Also, with finger rolls. I personally would stay away from them, unless you can get them to flow without having an awkward extra swing after the trick. Having one extra swing is fine, two and up for me ruins the entire flow.

When you've gotten a bit better at the basics, i love coming back to OG Japanese tricks like Whirlpool, Flamingo (and Super Flamingo) Spacewalk and Handrolls.

Not forgetting the newer stuff like Sweets Special (makes for a superb ender), Butterfly, C-whip mount (and the various ways to get to it), and 5A yoyo stuff like Electric Fan.

Then, you can incorporate tama slaps, which make the tama spin and make it easier to spike.

Hello Ben! I started string tricks when I started playing kendama :p the easiest ones are
-air whip TjKolesnik has a tutorial
-cold pizza Alex smith has a tutorial
    -flying V
    -fun house
-hand wrap UrielSanchez has good tutorial
    -swirl
    -space walk
    -nunchaku
    -hand roll
String tricks are fun and gives so much fliw to combo. The best thing about string tricks is that if you learend one, you can do it every moment and it is always easy. There is so much creativity with string tricks.

The first string tricks I learned were Sweets Special, handroll, and spacewalks. I remember practicing them standing up on my bed so that it wouldn't make super loud noises when it hit the ground every 5 seconds haha. But good on you for getting started on string tricks. I've been avoiding them for like 3 years

@Uriel Sanchez does have tons of great tutorials on his YouTube page, including lots of string trick tutorials. One of the best spacewalkers I've seen in my life.

Spacewalk, handroll, swirl and hurricane are not too difficult to learn and are super fun when combined :)

Spacewalk first then into handroll is probably the best starting place and very satisfying.

In my experience swirls take a lot of practice and require good timing and Hurricanes are usually gotten into from a Spacewalk anyways.

I'm not great at string tricks, but I learned spacewalk in, cold pizza, and swirl - not in that order. Although I can only really do swirl from tama grip, but it's super satisfying nailing that spike

My first ever string trick was a handroll, but it's good to do things like flying v/trapeze, cold pizza, and sweets special (to big or base cup) first because those tend to be more manageable to get, and are a good intro to string flow!

After that, spacewalk is probably the most essential string trick to learn. For a while, I could only do spacewalk to handroll - spacewalk ins are hard! But soooo rewarding! :)

My advice is to practice string tricks as much as possible over carpet, grass, and other soft surfaces. I've definitely ruined a lot of damas learning string over concrete, hahahaha. When you first learn flow, you'll probably drop your dama a lot! I know I sure did (and still do lol). Basecup chip central. >_<
