I will only glue the tip of the ken if it's spectra ply; I don't like gluing the tip of the ken on regular kens.
Anyone glue Resin kendamas like Rez or Rizen? I've never tried it. My rez isn't dulling very fast though, seems to be holding true longer than wood. Anyone else experience this?
Yeah I feel you on this. Playing with my new Ash Pro Mod and the new Ash Slim CRAFT, the ones I have played, I jam for a couple of days and let the spike slightly get some wear and tear. Apply some Krazy Glue (brush always) and let that baby soak it up. 2-3 coats w/ 10 min increments. She's ready to jam from there!
My first REZ from @Kristoffer Cabal, I didn't glue my tip and it stayed in tact the entire time I played it. Not too many vicious down spikes, but it held up. The newest Rez I have (Inkwash w/ current shape) has a glued tip. I paired it up with my Pro Mod Tama and it plays SO good. The super stick with the Rez... So good. I'd recommend it.
I typically play maple kens so the wood is already pretty durable. I glue the tip once when I get it, but never after that. This gives the spike a longer life while allowing it to break in for boarder balances. More than anything I feel like gluing your tip initially helps the conical shape of the spike to wear down evenly.
I use to have a ritual that i dont really follow anymore -get new dama -jam dama 2-3 days to get some hand oils in and maybe open the wood pores -apply thin layer of gorilla super glue with ta brush -let sit one day -jam for a day -apply slightly thicker coat of glue -let set one day -jam it up Its tedious, but it seemed to work the best. I dont really care about a glued tip anymore though, but do still use pretty much the same process if i chip a cup
2-3 coats? Maaan, I've always used one. But overall I do just about the same thing, just with one coat.
Nah, its ebony, its good for now. The day may come but we'll see. Mahogany tips are the ones to glue! Maybe some maples, depends.
Am I the only one that hates gluing spikes!?!? I don't like the look of it and I don't like the feeling of having a glued spike I like going all natural and let the wood die down by itself.
I always glued my tips until recently i realised that it destroys my tamas. I compared my friend's kendama, which doesnt hav a glued tip, with mine, which has a glued tip. His seems tackier and in better condition. Because of the hard glued tip. There is quite alot of paint chip on the tama
I haven't yet, probably because I haven't had very many damas that were "nice" (fancy) enough for me to be paranoid about the spike deteriorating, not to mention a lot of my damas were used once upon a time for boarder practice, but I'm planning on getting a GT soon and will most likely glue that so the tip lasts the longest. Last thing I have to say about not glueing is I personally love watching the way the tip deteriorates in time. It sort of makes me feel accomplished and I can actually think back about what tricks I landed or grinded for. If you don't glue your tip- your spike becomes a story.
I always Jam for a few days and then put about four thin layers of gorilla on the tip...I let each layer dry for about and an hour and then I put a small drop on the very tip. Then I Jam normally. After about 3 days of jamming that tip becomes a nice little round cap of glue and it works great.
I've never glued yet but I might try it. I don't see much of a point though. I don't feel a difference from a fresh/worn spike. Besides by the time it matters the sarado gets loose and really annoying sliding all the time so you have to push it down more than you would like.
So for my first kendama I bought a kaizen sea foam green/gray kendama. Within a week I destroyed my spike and really bummed me out. So that next week I ordered a TK-16 natty. This time I wanted my spike to last and saw online that putting gorilla glue on the tip will save it. I don't know it's because of the glue or the fact that the TK-16 is made out of birch, but my spike is still in great condition. Also I'm pretty good with spiking and rarely miss(between ordering and receiving the TK-16 I learned how to spike well with the dull kaizen). What do you guys do? Do you glue all your spikes or just certain ones? What are some pros/cons?
