What is the massive chip in the tama from @Cassidy Bailey

 

The Tallboy was my yank dama for a good while. The ash started to chip away layer by layer on both sides. The string hole is also pretty well caved in on top.

 

Duh.. its the worlds first flat spotted tama. Obviously

 

So obviously there are a lot of oversized damas out there ~5% bigger and I just ordered my first one, sol flow, so I'm hyped about that

So, what are the advantages to these oversized shapes?

what are the disadvantages?

How do they compare to standard size, and which do you prefer?

What is your favorite oversized dama?

*I am not talking about the jumbo-sized ones, I'm talking about the ones that are reletively close to standard size, so like max LBB size I guess*

 

Slightly upscaled kendamas don't feel bigger at first, and they are better for those who have hands that are a little too big for a regular kendama. I'm not sure about advantages or disadvantages other than the fact that they play pretty nicely. The only one I've tried is the Slaydawg, and it's really fun to do tricks on!Just watch out for weight difference because my Philip mod is off by almost 10 grams with it being ken heavy (82g!).

 

Yeah I totally agree, with the larger kens come a increased chance of having a mismatch for the weights.

Although my hands are small, I Love jamming Terra LBBs; the sling capability is perfect, cup tricks, stall tricks, tension tricks (like High Noon) and balance tricks are also fun to do. That being said, I’m not so sure with aerial tricks and some string tricks (it would hurt like a mother if the ken or tama wacked your hand due to the centripetal force).

 

All good, no bad. As long as they are not too big for your hands, or too heavy. Their all lunar slayers, wile slinging

 

Disadvantages - they make me angry when they are allowed in competitions. The JKA didn’t instate a set standard size for 40 years for nothing

 

You can't do slingers on most upscaled damas. Upscaled = chunky shapes, which means slingers will be harder.

 

really? I've heard that the slingers are very good?

 

On certain shapes, yeah. Case in point: GT-KA. From my experience from slaydawgs, however, i find it hard to sling with chunkier kens.

 

If you’re talking major competitions like MKO or KWC I don’t think they let you play oversized kendamas to begin with. However, I think they should just have a specific classes for oversized Kendamas when it comes to competing.

 

I mean I'm no pro at slingers but my LBB and slaydawg seem to be great for me at least. With that being said I'm a big Canadian boy(6'1"and 260lbs) with big hands so they don't feel chunky to me. Heck even a viking doesn't feel that bad even lol

 

I have a few GTKAs, and they all slisling for dayzzz, and my Craft Slim Plus is even more honed for slings. Really, the problem is the really chunky ones like slaydawgs, and GTBH, etc. But I have been able to hit trip slings on them, so it sure isnt impossibe. Most of the time, chunky = lunars, slim = slings AND lunars.

 

The JKA standard size is only recommended. Not mandatory. That’s why the dama box used at KWC and MKO dont perfectly fit just the Ozora or TK16 kendamas, but also are too small for larger sized damas like the LBB and Jumbo sizes.
The only place I can think of where your kendama must be JKA approved is when doing Dan and Kyu ranking exams.
Besides, anyone using a plus size dama like the Slaydawg or GT-KA mod aren’t going to magically become just as good as the pros when they compete on stage.
@KirStylez the box used for MKO and KWC will fit Slaydawgs, Sol Shapes and Sol Flows, GT-KA and I think GT-BH damas. And I believe the Craft Plus will fit in there too, not entirely sure. GT Tall Boys (I think) and Terra LBBs are too big to fit in the box so they’re too big to use for those competitions.

Yes Craft Plus is pretty much the max size for KWC. RodDama was able to modify an LBB to fit, but thats pretty hit-and-miss.

 

I thought so, since it's near close to the same size as a Sol Flow. I think the GT-BH just barely fit in when Ben Herald competed at KWC, could be mistaken.
Personally, I dig these plus sized damas. The Slaydawg, Sol Shape and Sol Flows definitely slay. I don't really think of it much as cheating, again not everyone who uses a sticky, larger, bigger cups setup is going to just all of a sudden magically slay like Bonz and Fisher. It does make learning and landing certain tricks easier, which can then be transferred over to more 'standard' setups like Ozoras and Kaizen 2.0s
