thanks. I think skill level has to do with a lot. Some people just want to be really good at kendama so they grind hard and invest a lot of time into it. Also some people just have more time to play. Being 15, I have time to play that someone with a full time job wouldn't. I really don't understand how good some people are after a year though, for example this guy:

Being that good after 1 year might seem suspiscious, but if you look at his first kendama video which is an unboxing, hes having trouble doing basic cup tricks. His progression is extremely impressive, some people just have it in them.

One of the best parts of kendama for me is that it's this never ending experience of hard grinding with these amazing like mountain-top milestones. I still remember hitting my first whirlwind, lighthouse flip, lunar, moon circle and so on. There's one trick in particular that sticks in my memory that I hit about 13 months into my kendama journey. I worked on this trick for probably four 1-2 hour sessions before hitting it and when I did it was one of the best feelings ever. I'd never gotten so stuck on a trick before and it got to the point where I even felt less motivated to play. I don't really ever want to get so fixed on a trick again but I'm happy that this is under my belt. Here it is:

I think my favorite moments in kendama in the earlier part of my first year are as follows:

    Bird, Handlestall, Lighthouse flip, Lunar,

I know that feeling as well. I've been playing for 4 months and recently i threw my dama in rage because of a certain trick. I'm always afraid of seeing myself as a bad player after my first year, so without noticing it, i'm constantly trying to land more difficult tricks. I keep comparing myself to other players that are way better than me after one year (XREMUS, Kenddavid for example). it's such a bad habit of mine.

I rarely get fully satisfied after landing a new trick because i still feel left behind. For example, recently i learnt regular pull up ghost lighthouse, after landing that a few times i want to include them with juggles which i'm terrible at also. The trick didn't work out and i became frustrated.

I need to re-think and start having more fun with kendama. I never want to give up on this hobby. I've been trying to upload tricks to my Instagram (@damaludde) as a journal for myself, so i can look back and be happy about my progression.

Not trying to go all "Zen" on you, OK maybe I am :D , but perhaps a change in the way you look at kendama and how you play would be a benefit. If you always compare yourself to others you'll likely never find peace. Try comparing your progress to yourself the day, week, or month before. You might even find that it's not hitting the next big trick that you enjoy but the grind to get to it or maybe even teaching others how to play and seeing the enjoyment they get out of playing. One of the big things for me is that it's become a way to relax and step away from the various projects and problems going on. You're definitely on the right track when you say "start having more fun with kendama." Good luck on the journey.

Also you might poke your head in over here for a little inspiration:

I appreciate the response. I read through the threads and i enjoyed seeing why people get so hooked with kendama. It kind of opened my eyes a little. I will definitely try to relax and enjoy it more during my next session. I love how the kendama community is always so humble and nice, i'm so used to toxic people from all of my gaming years. Thank you.

Thats one of the most beautiful thing about the kendama community. Everyone is welcome and accepted. And that is the way of thinking that we need to spread through the world to get a peaceful planet.
