I dropped one of my favorite quotes into a tread the other day and it got me to thinking maybe we could do with a spot for the inspirational, funny, quirky, or whatever kind of quotes, proverbs, adage, or sayings you guys might have. Here are a few of my favorites: The Law of Unintended Consequences Whether or not what you do has the effect you want, it will have three at least you never expected, and one of those usually unpleasant. Robert Jordan- The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time series) He that speaks truth must have one foot in the stirrup. --Turkish Proverb Parkinson's Law Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. - Cyril Northcote Parkinson
“I bargained with Life for a penny, And Life would pay no more, However I begged at evening When I counted my scanty store; For Life is just an employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have paid.” ― Jessie B. Rittenhouse
Catch & Flow 2016: as Fish is getting his trophies, Hongboots says, "Of course he gets a giant yogurt, it's Japan!" A sponsor of the event was advertising their new yogurt drink and handed Fisher a huge one for the pictures the media was taking.
"Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather, to skid in sideways, completely worn out shouting 'holy-mackeral that was one hell of a ride'!" - anonymous I believe this quote is loosely based on a Hunter S. Thompson quote.
This is just a lyric I really like. It's by danish singer/songwriter Kim Larsen (he's a pretty well known guy here in Denmark, and carries the title "Denmarks National Bard". To me, he's really good at capturing what true friendship means in a lot of his songs. "Det Bedste Til Mig og Mine Venner" (The Very Best For Me and My Friends) is one of the best, and this is my favourite verse from it Nerverne som glas på resteniler Skøjteløb på Bagsværd sø Kærlighed i kolde biler Så er man sgu bange for at dø Lyrics rarely translates very well, but it's something like Nerves like glass on rest rushes Ice skating on Bagsværd Lake Making love in cold cars Those things make you fear death I don't know, the whole feel of the songs and lyrics are very nostalgic - looking back at a young life with a smile on your lips and a tear in the eye. I really like lyrics like that.
There's a Malay phrase that goes "sediakan payung sebelum hujan", which literally translates to "prepare your umbrella before it rains". The phrase tells you to be prepared for any eventuality, so you don't suffer when it strikes. Speaking of not being prepared, here's another Malay phrase that goes: "Dah berak, baru nak gali lubang." It (roughly) translates in English to: "Only when you're done shitting, you'd want to dig a hole." Why is it said so? Back in the old days, there's no toilets, only outhouses, and if you're in the nature, you can't exactly take a dump in the river, now won't you? People back then would normally dig a hole (a deep one, i hope), poop in it and cover the hole right after. So, the phrase is meant to mock the receiver for not being prepared at hand, having to smell his/her shit, while digging frantically to cover it up.
Old age and treachery always overcomes youth and skill. - Don't know who said it first but it's in the song by Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson. (and a t-shirt I saw years ago)
While watching my favorite food show, Kodoku no Gurume (Solitary Gourmet) i stumbled across a quote which went: - The worst failure is not failing. Too relatable, to be honest.
To be extraordinary, you must first do the ordinary things, extraordinarily well. -Told to me by my Physical Therapist
There is never enough time to do it right the first time, but there is always enough time to do it over. Murphy's Law - Commerce
