How has your attitude changed about tricks or anything KENDAMA RELATED over time? I've only been playing 13 months now, but whereas I used to be stoked hitting a turntable or bird over the valley or whirlslinger, now I'm disappointed when I miss. Also, I used to think stilts looked odd, but now I think they look totally awesome. (I still think axes and underbirds look weird.) Additionally, I hated - HATED! - slick tamas, but now freaking love the challenge they pose. So... what ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENTS have YOU made over your dama life? GO!!!
I never really get frustrated anymore. Like sure, if I miss spike on some crazy long combo, that sucks. But I've gotten a 100 times better at just practicing and grinding a trick, without being frustrated by not getting it in an hour, or even a sesh. I never really get frustrated or mad as much when I play, which is nice
One of the biggest things that kendama has personally taught me is patience. When I first started I would get irrationally angry when I couldnt do big cup. This has taught me that if you try hard enough, and keep persevering, eventually you will get it.
For me I just get upset when I'm tired but I wanna lace. I usually won't get anything but I'll still go for it. In the end, I just end up being super frustrated. As far as adjustments go, I am not satisfied with certian tricks that I film. Before I would be super hyped to get a clip of a trick (really any trick), now I just get annoyed and end up spending hours filming trying to get harder tricks.
I don't know if it's attitude adjustment but instead of putting down a kendama when I just can't seem to hit anything I switch to left handed play. Often I'm not any better playing that way but at least I still get the benefits I'm seeking a little longer. I only half-jokingly tell everyone that kendama is my "smoke break" since I don't smoke and it really is. It gives me a way to step away from whatever for a few minutes. Maybe there's a book in there somewhere, "Zen and the Art of Kendama."
I think one of the biggest things I've adjusted to is laughing it off rather than getting pissed or frustrated at something like missing the last spike
I used to hate taps now I do taps a lot. I used to be able to lace 9/10 times I would go to record but now I laced 5/10 times I go to record. I used to hate anything that wasn't tacky but now I can play any paint. I used to always go straight in at the end of a trick if I had it on lighthouse now I rarely go straight in. I used to edit and slo mo all my videos now I post a lot of raw content. I used to only record in POV.
This is a huge thing for me. I have like a million "throwaway" clips on my phone that weren't good enough
When I am doing juggles and the string gets tangled around my hand and it keeps happening. that pisses me of so much. but I have tried going with a longer string about a lose 4 fingers and everything is all good I have also been getting used to natty kendamas, when I first started playing kendama october of 2015 I would ONLY play with sticky tamas and then I tried out my first natty kendama and I fell in love Now I would much rather prefer using a natty kendama then a painted one.
