btw im not yet sure if they're gonna make one for android. once the trick list is completed you can go to gloken & download the pdf file for the complete trick list. @tysonbatino would dendama make for android/update KWC app this year?
I talked to Kota today (he works for GLOKEN), and he's still compiling the rest of the videos. They'll be releasing another level every day until they get to level 12, as they have done for the last couple of years. Once they are all out, the full trick matrix will be released.
We recorded our kenflip syncro last Wednesday, so there was less than a week of turnaround to put out the level 3 video. As for loopholes, I think they're a good thing. Thinking of easier ways to do tricks is a good thing imo. It can get out of hand, but I think glockenspiel has a good handle on it, and specifies when they need to. One "loophole" I've noticed is Yumi yunta's handlestall falling in trick. A lot of people seem to be holding onto the ken and giving it a half turn, which seems more like a swap or juggle. I think they're both fine tho and it makes for a more interesting and diverse competition. For me it's still a lot easier to let go of the ken when I dump the tama anyways. Edit: @htimSxelA can you merge the two KWC threads please? Edit edit: 7 is up!
It's actually two different threads, though somewhat similar. One discusses the effect of having 12 levels, and the other simply discusses the event in general.
I just made a spreadsheet which includes all Levels of KWC released so far (as I'm writing this, it is up to level 11), this list also has links under each level which brings you to the level's respective video-just in case. Here is the link so you guys can start practicing desired tricks and have an eye on all of them at the same time.
PDF of the trick list up to lvl 10 is available on Gloken's homepage! I'm assuming lvl 11 and 12 will be added later. https://www.gloken.net/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2017/04/KWC2017-Trick-List_ver.1.01.pdf
For your info: - Trick levels 11 and 12 can not be used for prelims. - These can only be used for the finals. Looks like we may see a high number of prelims scores this time around. I think, due to this, the minimal score to get to the final stage will increase to 75-85?
I liked the 10 levels, 100 tricks of the past 3 years. I'll be interested to see how the 2 new extra levels affect play in the finals this year.
Up front, I feel like it'll be a good change. It spaces out the levels a little better, so the difficulty increase is more mellow, so qualifying will be more interesting, and upper-advanced players will have a wider range of tricks to choose from. For finals, adding in 11 and 12 brings back the really tough tricks (that would have been 9-10 in previous years), but adds an even larger reward for them. I guess in this way, it makes the big tricks worth even more. In previous years, the max points you could score for one trick was 100. Now it is 144. So landing just one or two big tricks is even more important, before you could just hit a couple of level 7's (2x 49 pts) and it would be pretty much the same as one level 10 (100 pts). Now, to match a level 12 (144 pts) you would need two levels 8s (2x 64 pts) and you're still a level 4 (16 pts) short. .... honestly I don't know if that analysis is the best way to describe the changes, but its interesting to think about nonetheless. I expect the winning score this year will be a new record. @azleonhart I think you're right qualifying scores will be higher. What were they the last few year? Always hovering around 70? I think we'll see a bump of ~8-10 points this year for minimum qualifying, maybe more.
It does, in my books! What i think Gloken is doing is addressing the styles and trends a bit better this time. Last year, the obscene amounts of taps and instas kinda eclipsed the trick list. A new record, probably, but i think it will be at a small margin, probably about 50 points more than last year's winning score (976). We probably see our first 1,000! I believe it was around the low 70's, yea! (It's a shame that Gloken does not release the complete scores for KWC, for both the prelims and finals, for all players.) On another note, i'm kinda bummed that there were only players from 8 countries in total, for the trick list videos this year. I mean, this is the Kendama *World* Cup, am i right? For the fourth edition now, and places like South East Asia keep getting neglected (i know that Singapore is on the list last year, but that's not the point).
Last years lowest qualifying score was 67 (not counting the wild cards). 75-80 seems like a reasonable number to hit in terms of qualifying. We might see someone as high as the mid 90's as the highest. My run will def. get me in! Shooting for 15! Should be fun.
I think you're right, 67 sounds familiar. I think the years before that it was low 70s, and it has come down a bit every year. I just looked up the winning scores for the last three years: 2014: 846 pts 2015: 775 pts 2016: 976 pts
Also remember that last year was the first year they allowed you to carry your scores from the preliminary round with you to the final. I believe Bryson scored 84 in the prelims, which is still the highest score ever, if you subtract that from his total. It seems that we have a lot of conversation every year regarding what prelim score you need to qualify. My son is predicting that the lowest will be 80 this year, he seems to think the tricks are a bit easier this year and he mentioned his friends/teammates think so as well. My question to him was, "are they easier or is everyone just getting better?" Who really knows, makes for good conversation at least.
Hmm I was wondering about that as I was searching out the scores, I wasn't sure which year they started adding the qualifying score onto the run. I think its probably a combo of higher skill, and easier tricks due to the levels being spread out a bit. I feel like 80 is maybe a bit high, but only time will tell! Kendama is always tougher when it finally comes down to the competition moment, people tend to forget that and overestimate themselves.
The nerves and the pressure of the KWC is always the wild card. Logan lost his breath when he walked into the arena the first day, he absolutely couldn't believe he was there!! I like to say "pressure can crack pipes or make diamonds"! Can't wait to see how everything shakes out.
sorry to bring back an older thread but had a question and did not wanna make a whole new thread but how are the KWC tricks selected?
Gloken picks what goes into the list. They usually ask pretty well known kendama players (Bonz, Stodd, Bray, etc.) to film a trick they think would be good for the list, and if they like it, they use it. They also kind of give you an idea of a good trick to film and you can tweak it if you want to make it harder or easier.
