Most players prefer a fairly balanced setup (ken/tama within about 8% weight of each other, usually tama-heavy), but yesterday I received a request for a super unbalanced setup! The player is a juggler from Vancouver named Yuki, and he's looking to incorporate some poi-style tricks, so an offweight setup will work better for that reason. So, here it is: keyaki ozora (57.4g) with a bubinga tama (101.1g) I'm actually stoked to see what he comes up with, dude has some crazy moves and skills!
oh my god, I can already tell it would be the worst handroll/spacewalk/lightning drop experience with that thing. But if it works, then it works!
@htimSxelA saw this thread and wanted to see for myself how an off weight setup would play. Sol walnut ken (super light) and a condensed hard bamboo tama (super heavy) I don't have a scale to get exact weights but this is as off as I can get in a standard size. @Nick Lectura it is no joke horrible for Spacewalk and Hand Rolls, at least for me. There may be some people out there who can do it but for me...just no. Looks pretty though.
I spun poi for a long time before finding/switching to kendama. The setup he asked for would be great for contact poi. A style that is incredible to watch, hard to learn (at least for me). The video below is of Asaf More, who does juggling and contact poi. It's one of my absolute favorites, I always imagine what he would be capable of given a kendama
I always like my tamas heavier but damn! Definitely would be good for contact poi, and probably feels amazing to spike in ken grip with all that force and momentum
Definitely some contact-poi, he was working on a trick last night that involved rolling the tama up your forearm, in a spacewalk-style line. It was super rad!
