One thing I'm particularly bothered by is how people strongly (and needlessly) throw their kendamas into concrete. I understand that sometimes it happens in the spur of the moment, like finally lacing that trick after a long grind, but sometimes I feel like it's done needlessly. For example, the last few moments of Flownamic Duo VII show Dave and Kenyatta throwing their Craft (a craft???) into the concrete ground. I won't judge a person with what they do with their kendamas, but as a guy who is always on a limited budget and needs to make his kendamas last, does anyone feel the same? Sound off in this forum below!
I'm of the mind that if you want to buy a new $400 mugen and then throw it in a fire, you can. Throw it in the ocean or at a wall. It's yours. It will make everyone sad. But it's still yours. I probably wouldn't film it. But whatever. I would say just try not to let it bother you. Fyi: I would like to see someone throw a mugen in a fire if someone has that video. Just for kicks.
Yeah, some people misunderstand "destroy all damas". It is about slaying so much and so hard that the tama looks destroyed. It is not about throwing your damas into the fire or concrete... I feel pain in my heart when I see a dama being thrown onto concrete.
Lmao. I could definitely imagine that. And then they do a spacewalk swap spike going through the loop on a mini bike. Haha
Yeah, it drives me crazy when people throw their damas at the ground. Especially when they break because someone could have used it.
Exactly!!! If you go through damas every month or whatever, and you use that to justify slamming them to the ground after lacing a trick, then just give it away in better condition to a "soon-to-be" slayer. I'd like to see more of that on film. Giving away a super seshed dama.
I am with you one hundred percent. It just feel like while it's inevitable that they will get beat up, you should still show some respect to the objects. I am not trying to get all animist, but even if you can easily replace it, take care of your stuff you know.
Do what you want with your own dama, that's perfectly fine. DONT do what you want with someone else's dama. If they ask you not to do some crazy stuff and then you do exactly that, you're a d$&@
In general I feel the same way. I think wrecking damas on purpose just because you can afford it is kinda douchy and wasteful. That being said, kendama edits are a form of art. Destroying a dama in an edit makes a really powerful statement. Think about Jimmy Hendricks lighting his guitar on fire. Sure there is some cringe factor, but it definitely makes you feel something. I really liked the shots at the end of the flownamic duo edit vii. Dave and Kenyatta put a lot of grind into that dama. It was fresh at the start of the edit. By the end it was pretty beat. The destruction gives a sense of finality. That dama served it's purpose. I don't throw my damas on the ground. That's not me. But I think there is a place for it.
I do get what you're saying! Not something I would do though, so everytime I want to spike or throw my dama on the ground, I try to look for a patch of grass or soft earth. Have to make my damas last since I'm not rich or sponsored lol.
I can only ever stomach slamming or throwing it when I am in a ton of grass and know that I didn't damage it so I won't need to use my next paycheck to replace it. Weak version of a cool statement move basically. Lol
I was a little tipsy the other night and mad at something completely irrelevant to kendama . But I had one around my neck . So I slammed it onto the concrete . Felt so bad , thankfully she was fine
I always thought it was pretty dumb, like when a rock star smashes a guitar on stage just to be cool. I'm over in the peanut gallery like, "a child could have found a lot of joy in that!!!"
