Ive noticed after my collection of damas has increased that the spike are different lengths. So I was curious what people’s preferences are on the lengths of them and how they can affect different play. (Also I got my wisdom teeth out and can’t do anything so this seemed like a solid topic to talk about)
I’ve noticed that longer spikes kindve get in the way with stilts so would a shorter spike make it hitting your finger less of a problem but harder to land in general???
maybe so, I don't really know if the spike makes much of a difference. I was actually just doing insta-stilts right before this with a pretty short spike on my sol flow, so I don't think they are harder to land with a short spike, but I'd like to hear opinions from other people as well.
Im still a bit mediocre at dama like I’m learning silt flip now but that’s definitely interesting. About about like birds tricks???
When I say insta-stilts, i mean insta stilt flip to in, not to stilt. I can't do stilt flips yet either. I don't know if spike length matters for birds unless the spike is really short.
~42mm-45mm seems to be my preference. Really long and they feel weird and slingers don't work well for me.
I'd say if you don't prefer a really long spike, don't jam your cups down, and keep the string out of the hole
I’ve had the opposite experience where my damas with slightly - much longer spikes have helped a lot with stilts. I rarely mess with them but I definitely noticed a pattern with the longer spikes helping more than inhibiting.
I think it is preference mostly. But, if your tama doesn't touch the top the of the sarado when it's on the spike, it's prolly too long. I have a couple like that and it's weird. There shouldn't be a gap when it's spiked. In my experience, stubby spikes tend to make for bad loons and better slingers. Prolly mentioned above.
I’ve noticed it’s better for slings too. I got a Sweets prime for secret Santa lol and the spike shorter than my honed damas
Some people think that short spikes help with earth turns and jumping sticks, but I’m kinda indifferent. I’ve had the opposite experience - short spikes generally make better slingers for me. I’m guessing that the main reason they sling so well the the massive sarado. (But I don’t have one, so I wouldn’t know.)
I agree with you guys: Short spike - Great gunslingers, bad Lunars Long spike- Great Lunars, harder too dodge your finger in a stilt There shouldn’t be a gap between Serrado and Tama when spiked.
Been playing some "next gen" kendama lately and noticed that the larger tama hole/bevel seems to make it more likely that the ken will jump out. Very seldom had that problem with more traditional hole designs.
