So what other skill toys do y'all do? And for how long have you been at it? And have you found aspects of it that translate into kendama? I'm a beginner at them but I'm trying to yoyo, balisong, begleri and cardistry.
I started yoyoing as well but I haven't put enough time in it to really make progress. Love watching it though! Also, check this skill toy out. Called the Flux. I bought one last year and they are super fun!
Myachi (footbag for your hands), Astrojax, Monkey Knuckles, and Poi Spinning. I started Poi spinning first then got into kendama I've found lots of similarities myself from string play. Then there are slayers like Dave Mateo & Kenyatta Williams that incorporate dance into their lace's which definitely showed me I could incorporate skills gained from spinning
I yo-yo every now and again. I try to learn one or two new tricks every year. Maybe by the time I'm in my 80s I'll be pretty good.
Skateboards and and snowboards, they could be skill toys ya? Haha if not then only Dama for me, I tried yo-yo and learned read fast I hate untying knots..
i actually started with poi and did that for about 8 years before growing bored and finally happened upon yoyo about a year and a half ago~ then i moved to Texas and about 6 months ago was turned on to kendama by all our amazing TX players!!
Kendama is the king of skill toys, but I play Pill too, a little bit of yoyo, and lately begleri has been a lot of fun to mess with. I'd recommend trying begleri, just cause it easily fits in your pocket, and you can literally pull it out an play anywhere, and you don't even have to look at it while playing!
Rubik's cubes; been messing around with them and collecting for 6 years. I play a bit of Begleri and Astrojax; only been playing on and off for about 6 months, so I'm not the best at them. Rubik's cubes take a lot of muscle memory, but it's mostly in your fingers. With Kendama, it sometimes takes full-body muscle memory. Begleri and Astrojax have similar movements and techniques as Kendama string tricks do. A lot of it can translate to and from each other. P.S. - Hi Nikki! Hi everyone! Started juggling, playing diabolo and balisong out of boredom during summer vacations. Got into solving Rubik's cubes during the last two years of college - had to attend some boring classes so it was perfect to kill time I enjoy playing the Pill too. Prefer the jumbo version.

I think my very first skill toy was astrojax way back in the day. Fun Started juggling in middle school, which included diabolo, devil sticks, etc. I'm not good at it but it is fun. Did yoyo in high school (and penspinning??) but forgot about it after. Also some unicycle. Picked up some balisong in college a little bit, dunno if I can still do it or not. Kendama most recent (and most fun!). Pill is awesome too, jumbo is more fun and easier for me. Started throwing knives recently (is that a skill toy??) Curious about begleri and have a few cubes I want to get better at solving.
My first skill toy was a yoyo. I have been doing that for about 2-3 years and then I moved to a different country, couldn't go to workshops/comps and then I gave up cause it just became boring. I also tried speed stacking (that was really boring cause you basically do the same thing over and over). After that I tried juggling, diabolo and astrojax. About 18 months ago I started speedcubing and I absolutely love it. Currently I'm sub 11 in 3x3. Now it's just kendama and rubik's cube
nice! i used to speed stack a longgggg time ago! haha i never went to any comps unfortunately since they were far away/none of my friends speed stacked XD
