One thing I've noticed experiencing different paint types and wood types is that different woods grip to different paints in different ways (Lol). For example, I've noticed that beech grips very well to silk/rubber paint, and that maple grips well to sticky paints. I've also noticed that ash kens don't grip as well as maple or beech to any type of paint. Is this just my experience, or do you think there are different woods that grip better or worse to certain paints? Let me know your thoughts.
I really do think that some woods and paints don't go together that well. I tried a POP tama on a maple Bray ken, and it was just not gripping at all. I tried using my E1 tama on a beech prime ken, and I just felt no stick at all. I think that the paints that might go well with any wood would have to be pro clear, aTack, or cushion. All of them are designed to grip the ken no matter what. aTack has been a personal favorite of mine, but it can get too sticky sometimes and cause the ken to "trip" when adjusting lighthouses.
aTack FTW. As for "grainy" woods like keyaki, ash, elm, etc. I think they work better with natties myself.
Very consistent woods grip quite well to sticky clear coats. Softer and porous woods grip well to rubberized coats. Grainy woods grip best to natties. *From personal experience, so not from some huge sample size
Always wanted an atack. Unfortunetely, I began my dama career after it had been discontinued,, and I hate to say I don't exactly want the full purple stained f3 setup on syndicate.
Did aTack get completely discontinued? I thought they still had it, just they weren't releasing as often. I remember some recent prime customs in aTack...
I can list the Prime Customs that used aTack. I won't be able to remember all of them, but only a few were painted with it from what I can remember. -V2 Orange to Pink to Teal fade (I believe this was the Sherbet Fade...) -V3 Purple Rain Split -V6 Midnight Rasta So far only 3 Prime Customs have used the aTack paint, but I could try finding some other aTack F3s on Amazon.
Yeah, I definitely remembered some Prime Customs in aTack. Thanks for this list. I hope they will release more aTack Prime Customs
I have 2 fairly seshed in Atacks, white and pink, the white is playable but the pink is like 85+grams, It just destroys whatever ken I put it on : ( But speaking towards the original post, I've noticed quite the Opposite @Carlos Habbenero , I don't particularly enjoy playing (fresh) maple kens for the most part because I find they have difficulty 'agreeing' with any type of top coat (sticky, silk, etc..), while ash and beech kens seem far more 'agreeable' out of the box. However my Maple F3 is still one of my trusty warriors, With a natty maple tama (koto tama) it's probably one of my favorite setups just because I'm so used to how it plays. -I wish I would have been able to scoop one of those Walnut E-1's, I'm super curious to see how one of those feels when it's been broken in.
Agreed, Majority of favorability is determined by the environment in which you typically find yourself playing in, Someone who lives in a super humid area might think super grainy, porous is trash, and maple would be better for them, maybe its the opposite, IDEA: A DS Census would be kind of interesting and would yield a lot of data we might find interesting as players and could even be valuable to the companies who make them for us....
