    Jokes aside. Once I get/make a new one I:
    - check the lunar balance
    - check if the tama is slippery or grippy
    - check the grip on birds (I might adjust the bevel shape/size if I made the tama myself)
    - feel the weight difference by doing a few spacewalks (weigh it when possible)
    - check the string length - going for three fingers
    - snap a photo (an old habit I had with fresh skateboard decks)

@htimSxelA, just to let you know, the image you posted above seems to be broken.

Caught!! You're right I don't normally do it actually. But I see other people do it and I find it kinda hilarious. I've done it after the fact, but I never think to smell my kendamas. I guess if you DO sniff them, you'll want to do it when their fresh and not jammed a ton....

I use check the tackiness then glue the spike. Then after that I hardly play with it. I have a bad habit of putting fresh damas to the side. Don't know how to stop doing that tho.....

Check the string length, take a photo/boomerang for the IG story, check weights, test ken for "slingy-ness", attempt around all american first T, miss, attempt luns and lightys line, miss, settle for being eternally soft and mess around bigcup kenflips and downspikes/downearths.

First of all, I check the string length (min. 3 finger deep for now :p). After that, I like to go through all the basic tricks, from beginner to advanced. I have a list, and my youtube ladders to keep track.

I glue the spike and try to baby it. Some soft cupflow and spikes. Check lunar balance after and that's about it!

If it is a paintet kendama, I always start off with checking Lh and lunar balance, and string them 3 fingers. But if it's a natty I always spend a lot of time doing cup tricks to break it in. Like around USA.

im not actually sure what i do regularly with new Damas, but i know for sure i always check the Tama againest the big cup to make sure its spherical then ill usually do some moshikames, maybe baby it a little bit until i drop it, then once i drop it all rules out the window.
also i don't glue the spike right away, ill usually play it for awhile and beat the spike in just a bit then glue it after a few spike smashes

    1. check the ken and tama out to make sure there are no issues with them
    2. push the cups down
    3. check balances (lunar, slings, stalls)
    4. check string length
    5. beat the crap out of it

    1) Check spike length(if too short, attempt to push the cups down. If too long, use post-its to restrict the sarado from going to low.)
    2) Check string length(if too short, attempt to untie and retie the knots to get a longer string. Otherwise, replace the string or just DWI.)
    3) Make sure the tama doesn't "float" on the spike and hit the bead.
    4) Check tackiness.
    5) Do a quick small-cup lunar and see if the lunar balance is good while it's fresh.
    6) Shred to bits or until something major happens to it.

    Hold it like a baby

    Rub if against my face

Tell it "you're a good dama, yes you are, who's gonna have good lune balance, you are aren't you"

Rip it apart and restring to lefty while i curse the gods for not giving me the gift of being ambidextrous

    Take photos for memories....and likes

Proceed to destroy with mediocre skills
